Afternoon – West Point Island
The moment I’d been waiting for – Rockhopper penguins! And it’s the first day of landings!!! As cute and entertaining as these guys are on TV, you still can’t believe how great they are in person. I could sit and watch them all day.
You have to watch every step – they’re not only nesting on the rocks with the Black Browed Albatrosses, but they’re in the tussock grass we’re standing in! A small “parade” of Rockhoppers on their way back home, with a Macaroni thrown in for good measure, made for an entertaining and enjoyable rest.
West Point Island, like Carcass, is owned by a single couple - in this case, Rod and Lily Napier. The island itself has been a sheep farm since 1879 when it was “settled” by Rod’s great uncle. As on Carcass, tea and cookies were offered and gratefully accepted before heading back to the boat.
Next - Port Stanley
