Morning – Carcass Island
Our first landing was wonderful! We never expected to see so much green! Weather is warm and sunny – and the morning starts out perfectly as we’re greeted by a colony of Magellanic penguins as our Zodiac lands at Leopard Beach. It’s really surprising to see white sand, lush grass, and so many bright colors. Not what you expect…
On a two hour walk across the island to Carcass Village, we saw Falkland Flightless Steamer Ducks, Striated Caracaras, Magellanic Oystercatchers, and, according to the log, about 31 varieties of birds.
Heading over to Pattison Bay, we spot some Commerson’s dolphins escorting the Zodiacs to Carcass Village. Also some nesting Gentoo penguins in the tussock grass and these guys… if you can tell me what these are, I’d appreciate it!
Our walk ended with tea and cookies at the home of Rob and Lorraine McGill. They’ve lived here for almost 30 years and are the sole residents. I can understand why they stay. Hard to believe we’re heading to Antarctica when there are palm trees in the yard!
